Quest for the Ultimate Magic Item: Balancing Power and Risk in D&D
Download MP3Adam: Well met, patrons, and welcome
back to Tavern Talks, where we
help you run better D&D campaigns.
I'm Adam, joined by the
treasure-hungry Zac.
Zac: You know it.
15 episodes deep, and
I'm still loot obsessed.
Today, magic items worth questing for.
Adam: Not just plus one swords,
items with history, hooks,
and a little danger baked in.
Zac: So grab that tankard of
yours and let's go digging.
Adam: Zac.
Zac: Adam.
Adam: Did you know?
Zac: No.
Adam: A plus one sword is the most
boring thing you can hand a player.
Zac: Yeah, you hand me a
plus one sword, I'm gonna be
pretty bummed about that, man.
Adam: Well, I have a solution for you.
No.
ShamWow.
Zac: ShamWow.
The most magical item in all of Faerûn.
Adam: No, but for real, if you, if
you incorporate common day items
and make them magical, I think
those are really funny to do.
So like ShamWow can clean up any mess.
It's like prestidigitation.
Zac: You and the damn prestidigitation.
Adam: Lovely, lovely spell.
I can't
Zac: stand that
Adam: spell.
But just think about it,
it's a little ShamWow cloth.
Zac: Well, no, I mean, I reallyâ¦
You know me.
I mean, I like home brew more
than what's by the book anyway.
I meanâ¦
But no, you, you hand me a, a plus
one sword, I feel like that is just
going to be the most boring thing
you can actually give a player.
Adam: Well, give it a name.
You can't just say,
"Here's a plus one sword."
You know?
Zac: Here's Zac's plus one sword.
Yeah.
Adam: I
Zac: mean-
Adam: I mean, freaking Lord of
the Rings even named their swords.
Zac: Yeah, I mean, that's true.
That's completely fair, and right off the
top of my dome I couldn't give you one.
Except for Sting.
I mean, that's about it.
Sting,
. Adam: Glam- Glamdring.
That's what it was.
Zac: That's a Elvish sword, isn't it?
That's Gandalf's
Adam: Elven sword.
Yeah.
Long sword.
And then Orcus, Orcrist,
and Sting, and- Yeah,
You shouldn't give your characters just
a plus one sword or a plus one bow or-
Well, you should ⦠or a plus one mace.
You should make it more
interesting than that.
And that's kind of what this topic
is about for today, is how to make
those magic items and then home
brew your own items, um, to make it
more interesting for your character
Zac: Yep, that, and
that's the episode, folks.
Theâ¦
No, uh, in all serious, what's the,
uh, for you, Adam, like what's the most
memorable magic item you've handed out?
And like did, knowing I've been a part
of some really good campaigns of yours-
Adam: I liked my scepter
Zac: Your what?
Adam: The s- the scepter.
Zac: That- The empress?
Adam: Yeah.
Zac: In our dead campaign?
Uh-huh.
Adam: Yep.
That was my-
Zac: All right.
Do ex- do you explain to our viewers
Adam: what that did?
So I had a scepter that this ancient
red dragon hoarded, and I had a level 20
party as a s- a prequel to the campaign.
Zac: Session zero.
Adam: Session zero basically go
out and, uh, retrieve this, um,
kill this ancient red dragon.
Well, come to find out that one of the,
um, things about this scepter is cursed.
Um-
Zac: Oh, wow.
Cursed items.
Adam: What?
But it also has the ability to remove
magic, uh, from a person, so it's
able to absorb it, and- Yes ⦠they
lose their, uh, magical abilities.
So-
Zac: Consequently, magic was
outlawed in your campaign-
Adam: Yes
⦠Zac: due to this corruption of a character
and, you know, that, that ability.
Yeah.
It,
Adam: I think it was a
really good magic item.
Zac: I think it was a f- I, I guess
I'm asking along the lines of m- like,
yes, we got to see the repercussions
of that- Mm-hmm ⦠but we didn't,
like, players didn't get to use that.
Yeah,
Adam: you didn't get to play with it.
So- Probably, probably my
Zac: s- Oh, playable magic item
⦠Adam: playable magic item, um, I did
give one time, way back when, I did
give somebody an amulet of invisibility.
Zac: Mm-hmm.
Adam: Um, and they used that pretty
effectively, I will say, as a character.
Um, and it wasn't even a rogue.
It was a freaking paladin
that retrieved it.
Um, so a big old- Interesting ⦠a
big old clanky paladin.
Zac: Paladin
Adam: using invisibility.
Yeah.
Zac: Hey, advantage on stealth, I guess.
Adam: So yeah.
It was, umâ¦
And it was funny 'cause this had
happened back during college.
I gave him an amulet of invisibility,
and then, um, Dungeons & Dragons:
Honor Among Thieves had, had an
invisibility locket, uh, as well, and
Zac: I was like-
Adam: Oh, yes.
Daughter had it ⦠I
was like, "Ah, yeah."
Zac: His daughter
Adam: had it.
Yeah.
I was like, "Aha."
Someone else used that appropriately.
But I, I did think in, in Honor
Among Thieves that she should've
done it a little bit better.
Um, I feel like she should've
spied a little more invisible.
I mean, she
Zac: used it pretty well.
She
Adam: did at the
Zac: end.
I mean, as, as much as
you possibly one can.
Yeah.
You know, with what story they
had, I mean, that was a phenomenal
movie, and- Yep ⦠the sad thing
is we're not gonna get a second one.
Adam: Nope.
Maybe one day.
Zac: Because of people criticizing
how she didn't use the amulet right.
Adam: Yeah.
That was not me.
Zac: Thanks, Adam.
Adam: Uh, but yeah, amu- amulet
of invisibility, um, and, uh, I
had a, uh, a basically a hermit.
I had a whole story around a hermit-
Zac: Okay.
Adam: I see ⦠that lived up in a cave.
Mm-hmm.
Um, and he would sneak into town and
steal f- you know, stale breads and
stuff, and that's how he came and went.
He's a hermit then.
He, he became a hermit almost.
Um-
Zac: So basically you said, like,
you gave this an origin to the item.
Adam: Mm-hmm.
Zac: And, like, a reason the players
needed- Yes ⦠to go get it.
Mm-hmm.
Was there any, like- drawback to it?
Adam: Um, the drawback was it could
only be used every, uh, other night.
Okay.
Um, and it can only be in,
be used in dark places.
Zac: Okay.
So was this like a, was, I'm
assuming this was a home brew-
Adam: Yes.
Um, I pulled- ⦠amulet ⦠I pulled
from different kinda spells- 'Cause, I
mean- ⦠pulled from an amulet ⦠yeah.
I mean, there is amulets
of invisibility out there.
I wanted to tweak it a little
bit, uh, f- for the purposes of
the campaign, um, because- Okay
I didn't want them just to be running
around invisible all the time, you know?
I g- you gotta have some drawbacks.
Zac: What's, what's the drawback
for being invisible all the time?
So-
An invisible
Adam: paladin- Some people wish that-
⦠that's not a threat ⦠some people wish
that they could be invisible all the time.
Zac: Me.
Um, yeah, no, I guess there's
no drawback to full invisible.
Adam: No.
And then, um, I think another magical item
would be the, uh, in our current campaign,
the Cipher of the First Flame, with you
being able to talk to a celestial deity.
Zac: Are you talking about in
our campaign- Mm ⦠the Tales
of the Broken Realms right
now- Tales of the Broken Realms
available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts?
Adam: That's right.
Zac: Amazing.
Adam: But yeah, I think that
one was a cool one as well.
Zac: It is aâ¦
And it, that's a, that's a
piece together item though.
Yes.
We haven't even seen it in use.
Adam: No, we have not.
But the thing is, is-
Zac: Will it get used?
Adam: Maybe.
Zac: Who knows?
Adam: But the, the whole idea was
it was a helpful magical item for
the quest at hand of trying to, you
know, revive a god at that point.
So that's-
Zac: Interesting
⦠Adam: that's kindaâ¦
Those, those two are most memorable to me.
There's a few others thrown in there.
Um, I, uh, try to pull from
different topics and different
culture things, you know?
Mm-hmm.
The invisibility thing, similar to
the One Ring in a, in a sense, but
it has its drawbacks too, um, for it.
Fair enough.
It's definitely not cursed
like the One Ring is.
Zac: Fair enough.
Okay.
Interesting.
Yeah.
No, those are some really
solid items there, buddy boy.
Um, I enjoy an item or two.
You know me.
You know the campaign we got going on.
I do.
Adam: Yeah.
We have plenty of magical
items that you throw in.
Zac: Just whenever, 'cause I feel like it.
Adam: Yep.
Zac: I really do.
I'll be handing them out like
Oprah hands out goodies, you know?
You get a magical item,
you get a magical item.
Um-
You can edit this part out, buddy, but
aren't you supposed to ask me a question?
Adam: Do you th- do you want to add
drawbacks or do you want to punish
somebody when they have a magical
item, or you just want them to use it?
Zac: Um, it really depends.
I'm big on, like, fate of the die.
Adam: Mm-hmm.
Zac: As you as you know, I do not-
Adam: Plenty of that
⦠Zac: I, the dice make the rule.
Um, like, I think a lot of my, my
magic items y- you've received,
at least as of now, have kinda
been off table, off script.
Mm-hmm.
Like, I'll ask people outside of the,
the campaign when we're playing, like,
"Hey, your god visited you in a dream.
You know, give me a roll."
Yeah.
Mm-hmm.
And, you know, "Hey, you
were given this or this."
Um, I think when I made y'all roll,
um, in Tales of the Broken Realms,
a D20, I had a preset list of s-
um, magic items and spells and
stuff that I like to give everybody.
But, like, when I made y'all roll, like
I said, I had it all kinda planned out.
Some were home brew items, some were
actual, like, D&D fifth edition items.
Um, you rolled, you got
the Staff of Healing.
Adam: Mm-hmm.
Zac: Very overpowered item, like
one of the top legendary items.
Adam: Well, we need it for the campaign.
Zac: You don't know you need
it- Yeah ⦠but yes, you will
need it coming up as- As a, as a
Adam: player.
Zac: I, I- Above table-
Yes ⦠you're gonna need it, pal.
Yeah.
Below table, your character
don't know you're gonna need it.
Adam: Yeah.
Zac: Um,
Adam: You have legitimate magical
items that you pull from D&D.
And,
Zac: and then I haveâ¦
But the most fun I have with magical items
are the ones where I get to home brew.
Adam: Oh, I'm sure.
Um- I mean, home brew magic items are
real fun in a, in a sense of what kind
of craziness that you can get up to.
Now, there's a limit to that
'cause you can become overpowered.
Zac: You can b- and that's, that's
where I try to draw a fine line.
If I know what y'all have some s- very
powerful items, I try to make it to
where you're gonna have some really
difficult battles or challenges.
Adam: Yeah.
Or you draw back the magical items.
It has its-
Zac: Correct
⦠Adam: you know,
Zac: double-edged sword.
There's a reason you haven't gotten any-
Adam: Mm-hmm
Zac: recently.
Um, you will probably have a c- a
chance to get a couple of more things
in the next one, but like I said, I
know what y'all are going up against.
And then, and guess, guess what?
Y'all have capitalized
on getting these items.
Um, but there is a thing,
is a thing as, um, too much.
Adam: Yes.
Zac: Like, you c- you can,
Adam: you know- You're
not gonna bling them out.
Zac: No.
I mean, and the thing is
y'all have a lot right now.
Mm.
Like, youâ¦
We're teetering on the scale of too much.
Adam: Yeah.
Um- And that's fine, and you, you can
always, you know, lessen- Right ⦠that,
just not introduce another magic item.
Um, I think in campaigns and, and
storytelling in general, I think you're
trying mostly to move the story along,
but give them an, a example And in those
examples, um, you're giving them a magic
item either to progress the story or
you're giving them a magic item because
you almost, uh, it's almost like a save
in a game right before the boss battle,
you have, like, one of those safe zones.
Zac: Oh, no, that's like, whatâ¦
That's myâ¦
Well, see, I, I went into planning
my thing knowing how it should end.
Not saying y'all would get there
or you wouldn't change the story, I
mean, as a DM, you gotta be ready,
you gotta expect the unexpected.
But I also know the challenges in
what y'all would face, and we are
at the end of this, uh, campaign
one, essentially, you know?
Um, so I wanted to really give y'all
the chance to kinda feel the powered.
Um, but also remember what levels
y'all are at currently, and you're
about to be fighting level 20
creatures and you're only level 13s.
I've gotta balance the scales here.
So it, it, I understand there's too
much, but I, I have fun in kinda
giving my own twists and turns- Yeah
to, you know, items and whatnot.
Adam: Oh, well, yeah.
I mean-
Zac: What, what have you.
Adam: I mean, you definitely have
homebrewed some cool items, I will say.
Zac: What's your
Adam: favorite item?
Um, in "Tales of the Broken Realms."
Zac: I know, I, I do enjoy
the, the homebrewed items.
Adam: Um, I think the
Ring of Solomon's fun.
I think it, it adds a
fun little aspect to it.
Um-
Zac: It's exceptionally overpowered.
Adam: It is.
It is.
Um, explain what it does.
Zac: The Ring of Solomon, or I call it
a ring with the Seal of Solomon, um,
in "Tales of the Broken Realms" you'll
learn we pull from a lot of mythologies
and a lot of different, like, Faerunian
gods, Aztec, Egyptian, all this stuff.
Well, in this, a magical raccoon
vendor was selling a ring, and
it had the Seal of Solomon.
This Seal of Solomon summons the
high-ranking demon, uh, Asmodeus,
and, uh, the player can control him
for 10 rounds and, and/or a minute.
Or no, 10 minutes real time?
Mm-hmm.
10 minutes real time.
Um, so if you're not using
him for a battle, you got
him for 10 minutes real time.
Let me tell you real quick, I did not,
uh, did not expect y'all to use it
in the way you did, but it's, uh- I
Adam: didn't expect to use
it in the way we did either
Zac: Well, it's a, it's an extremely
overpowered item, and they're
only able to use it once a week.
It takes a week to regenerate the power.
There's your drawback, folks.
I mean- Yeah, there's the
drawback, but congratulations.
Adam: You're not punishing.
That doesn't feel like a
punishment either- No, that's
Zac: exceptionally- ⦠as
powerful as it is.
Adam: I mean, we'll get to
use it in the final fight, so.
Zac: Maybe.
Adam: Oh, no.
Zac: Maybe, maybe not.
But- Hope you do
⦠Adam: anyways, uh, so before we move
on, I just wanna, you know, give a
quick, um, listen to our listeners,
a quick little aside I will say.
Listen to
Zac: our listeners?
Adam: Yeah.
Listen-
Zac: Are they
Adam: speaking to us
Zac: right now?
Adam: They should be, in a review.
Zac: They're in the walls.
Adam: They should be speaking
to us in a review, Zac.
Um, again, we wanna thank you for the
previous reviews that you have given us
at, uh, Tavern Talks, but please always,
if you have enjoyed this episode so far,
please leave us a review and, uh, that
will greatly benefit us in the algorithms.
So thank you.
Zac: Walls.
Adam: So Zac touched on this of how much
is too much in magical campaign settings.
Um, I also think it's different in Tales
of the Broken Realms just because it is a
one-shot campaign style with rotating DMs.
Yeah.
So you de- definitely will have
magic items that can either carry
over or have it for the DM sessions
that they, uh, are allotted in that.
But I think in a regular D&D campaign,
I feel like magic items go a lot longer.
Um-
Zac: I will say they're less frequent.
Adam: And they're less frequent, yeah.
Zac: Yeah, because, I
mean, ours is a story.
We are kinda on a time schedule for it.
We do have to tell a story, and we do have
to let everybody tell their own version.
Um, but within that, we kinda know the
pacing of it, and it's not like you
can wait, you know, six episodes before
you can give somebody a magic item,
because by that time, there's a new DM.
Adam: Yeah.
Zac: And they're telling their story.
Adam: Mm-hmm.
Zac: So y- you do have to kind of
frequent the magic items a little
bit more in our storytelling.
Adam: Yeah, but we're doing
something different, and I
think that's understandable.
Zac: Look at us.
Look-
Adam: Look,
Zac: just look at us
⦠Adam: do- doing something different
Zac: out in the- Two dudes
doing something different.
Put that as the title of your video.
Adam: Yeah.
Um, but, uh, I think in regular
campaigning, as you're going
about, usually you'll find
a magic item on a dead guy.
That's usually how you find it.
Some wizard somewhere-
Zac: Wow, this, this dead's, this
dead guy has a magical item, and
he looks like he might be cursed.
I want the magical item.
Adam: Yeah, I mean, I feel like you find
it there or you're dungeon crawling and,
and you better have a reward at the end
if you're dungeon crawling, 'cause your
players will hate you if you don't.
Zac: Yeah.
Adam: You gotta have a purpose to it.
Yeah.
I think that's a purpose.
Zac: And I mean, itâ¦
Like, we've talked about
drawbacks a little bit.
We've kinda briefly touched on those.
And yes, drawbacks of magic,
frequent magical items is
you can break world economy.
I mean, if you reallyâ¦
We're talking about these long-term
DM sessions, you know, stuff that's
been going on for years or weeks
or months with your own party.
You don't wanna break your own world
economy by giving them the best
things ever, and then they can justâ¦
Or bypass boss fights, you know?
Adam: Yeah.
You just become a god.
Zac: Right.
So w- we go back to drawbacks.
Let's, let's dig a little
bit deeper into this.
Magic items don't always have to be good.
Adam: No, they don't.
Zac: So let's- They
Adam: can be bad.
Zac: Yeah.
So let's talk about those.
It's
Adam: good to be bad sometimes.
Zac: It feels good.
What's that from?
That's a movie.
"It feels good to be bad."
You know, it's like aâ¦
I feel like it's a superhero movie.
Yeah.
Some corny ass movie like that.
I
Adam: thought it was like a greaser
movie or something like that.
Zac: A greaser movie like Grease?
Adam: No, like Out-
Outsiders or something.
Zac: Higher Stud, when
Sandy's goes to the dark side.
Adam: No.
Zac: And they're actually dead.
That's the theory.
No, um, no, cursed, cursed items are huge.
Adam: Cursed.
Zac: Cursed.
Adam: Cursed you said.
Cur- cursed gold.
That Davy Jones
Zac: locker.
Adam: You got cursed
sabers, you got cursed-
Zac: Yeah
⦠Adam: chests.
Zac: Well, I mean, I think it, it
really adds a, a layer to magical
items because you're, you're getting to
tempt them with a really good reward.
Adam: Mm-hmm.
Zac: It might be a little bit
dangerous, you know, just a,
a little bit, a little bit.
Um, but it, it's really about-
Adam: I feel like your magic items that
are cursed are really cursed though.
Zac: Mine are not that bad.
Okay, name two.
Adam: The, uh, what was the
goblin pouch that I have?
Zac: It is called the Loot Goblin's Pouch.
Adam: Yeah.
Zac: That's a good item.
Adam: It's a terrible item.
Zac: Okay.
I'll explain it to our viewers.
Y'all can take a poll- Go
ahead ⦠in the comments below.
The Loot Goblin's Pouch was given
to Adam's character, named something
Valentine, Crispin Valentine.
Yeah, there we go.
There you go.
That cornball.
It was given to Crispin Valentine
by a necromancer because a book
accidentally took their friend
to the shadow realm, basically.
Um, and he's like, "Hey,
sorry pal, here's a, a pouch."
What this pouch does is a player can
place an item, let's just take a potion
of healing, for example, into the pouch.
By rolling a D20, a one through a
10 dictates that a small goblin, the
size of think Gizmo from the Gremlins,
pops out of the pouch pissed off and
bites their leg for 1D4 of damage.
If they roll an 11 through a 20, the
goblin trades out their item with
something of equal or greater value.
That's a pretty good cursed item.
You have a 50/50 chance.
Adam: I just don't want the
goblin to come out and bite me.
Zac: It, it's gonna bite your leg.
I don't want it to bite my leg.
It's gonna take a little, a little D4.
Nobodyâ¦
Y- you guys got like 100 plus HP.
It'll be all right.
Adam: Fair enough.
Um, what is some of the other cursed
items that you had on that table?
Zac: Um, on, in that- Yes.
Mm-hmm ⦠I was gonna use like
the one I gave Caleb, the cursed
eye patch, Captain Brisbane.
Adam: Mm-hmm.
Zac: Um, okay, this was not
in the necromancer's table.
Uh, truth be told, I just had
like three things set aside.
Adam: Yeah.
Zac: And y'all didn't really
have to roll for them.
But anyway, going back, another
thing I gave my player, cursed
eye patch, Captain Brisbane.
Made up lore and everything.
It was a cursed pirate's eye patch.
Um, it allows them to see beyond any true
polymorph, even on a celestial level, but
they were blind in one eye for 12 hours.
Um, that makes any future encounters
anything, like they gotta roll
with disadvantage on- Yep ⦠any
kind of sight related stuff.
Um, that was a good cursed item.
The other two I had on the table, I think
I had like an evil bong of some sort.
Like I literally was gonna have it to
where you either have a good trip or a bad
trip, um, and it would give you foresight
abilities essentially where you, your
character would be able to kinda predict.
Adam: So it's like Augury?
Zac: Kinda sorta, yeah.
Um, and then the last one, I was
just gonna have a cursed blade, and
it was gonna talk in a, a Bostonian
accent and wanna shank people.
That was it.
Dang.
It w- it wasn't- Gotta
Adam: go back now.
Want the shank.
" Zac: Hey, what you doing there?
Hey, come back here, guy."
You know, like just a real-
Adam: That'd be funny
Zac: Rick and Morty character-esque thing.
Yeah.
Adam: You could always
make a blood drinker sword.
Those are always fun.
Zac: Like Poes's
Adam: sword?
Mm-hmm.
Zac: Yeah.
Yeah.
No, we ain't doing Poes's sword.
Adam: Nah, I'm just saying for our
Zac: viewers out there.
Vecton's not here yet.
Adam: Yet.
Zac: Yet, keyword.
Um, no, but I enjoy my cursed items.
I think cursed items, w- when we're
talking about too much drawback on
good things, um, balance it out.
Cursed items need to be as-
Yeah ⦠just as much as an offerance
to your players as a magic arm.
I
Adam: think you have to balance that
pretty well between of how powerful
is this item versus what kind of
damage c- should be done- Is it gonna
do ⦠on the, on the other side.
Similar to like my scepter.
My, my scepter basically- Or deck of many
Zac: things.
Adam: Yeah.
But my scepter changes the
character's, um, alignment, flips it.
Oh,
Zac: that is
Adam: true.
You know?
So- That is true ⦠you, you, you're
evil, you're good now, and then
you're, you're good, you're evil now.
And,
Zac: and I feel like that's, you
know, something we should talk about
in terms of these magic items, 'cause
we haven't really addressed it.
You can just as much make a homebrew
item that has a good balancing as
one you would find in a D&D manual.
Adam: Yeah.
Zac: It, it, it-
Adam: I mean, you could just go to Google
and search magic items- Awesome ⦠on
D&D and there gives you a whole list,
plus one short sword, plus one- Um ⦠you
Zac: know?
Let your creativity shine through, though.
I would say go homebrew.
Adam: Yeah.
Um- And if you're even wanting to
talk about basic, um, magic items
like your plus one long sword or your
plus one crossbow or something like
that- Ah ⦠you, you know, give it a
name instead of just, "Here's a plus
one, you know, sword that you find."
I mean, if you wanna do a plus one
ax, maybe it's, and it's for a,
um you know, let's say it's for
a druid or something like that.
May- maybe make it, you know, fae related.
Maybe it's a fae's ax that got
transported into this world.
Or it does
Zac: more, more damage
Adam: to fae creatures.
Yeah, a little bit more s- you know,
different things like that you can add
as a, like a just a regular magic item
to make it more impactful- Little oomph
towards your- Little- ⦠character.
Little boost.
Yeah.
You give it some origin,
you give it some history.
Um, you know, there, there's maybe
this famed blacksmith somewhere in your
campaign, and maybe that is one of its
blades has been crafted by him, you know?
Mm-hmm.
Make it impactful.
Just don't say, "Hey, you
found a plus one sword."
Right.
Why, why, what, what kind of
sword was this at, at one point?
Why is it plus one or
plus two or plus three?
Zac: Yeah, and I, I mean, once again,
put in the four ingredients of any
good magical item or cursed item.
Give it a origin/history, give it
a reason it hooks the player, give
it its entire existence, the hook.
Give it a drawback or a cost, and
have it evolve with the player.
Adam: That's why blood
drinker is kind of fun.
Yeah.
You could, you could make it
into a- I'm not doing a blood
Zac: drinker.
Adam: You, well, you can make it
into, like, a talking sword where it-
Zac: Ghost talked.
Adam: Yeah.
But I'm just- Sort of ghost talked.
Yeah.
But basically it talks to you, but
it needs blood, and it's, it, it,
like, becomes a part of you in a way.
Um, I think those are cool.
Zac: Vox Machina literally did that.
Adam: Um, a lot of
people kind of did that-
Zac: Yeah, no ⦠in a way.
I, I think just- I mean, it's been, it's
Adam: been around.
Zac: Yeah.
No, that's, that's completely fair.
But speaking of homebrews, um,
send us your homebrew magic item.
If you're listening right now,
um, Adam and I will run it through
the four ingredients, uh, live
on the podcast and lovingly.
Adam: Yeah.
Zac: Maybe.
Or I might criticize it.
Adam: No, we'll, we'll get it in the next,
uh, few episodes, um, for that, 'cause
since we record in, in bulk together, um,
it may be a few episodes down the line.
But when we- So- ⦠get to it,
we will make sure to let you know.
Zac: Yeah, Braxton from Missouri, we'll
let you know in about three episodes.
I'm just kidding.
If someone's named Braxton
listening to this in Missouri, I'm
sorry, I don't actually know you.
I just took a random guess.
Adam: You could've just
named it Jarnathan.
Zac: Jarnathan?
Adam: Yeah.
Zac: I'll just say it was
due to a magical item.
See what I did there?
There
Adam: you go.
But yeah, um, we definitely would,
uh, like to hear your guys' magic
items that you guys have had.
Um, I do find it, uh, funny, uh, I do
find funny magic items, and this will
be a whole segment in itself, uh, right
now, um, is funny comedic magic items
or mundane items that are magical.
Zac: Ooh.
Adam: Um-
Zac: Oh, you just ta- you
ta- kinda talked about that
Adam: in the beginning.
Yes.
Um, there, there's one I saw on
Reddit the other day, and it was like,
it's a, it's a fish, um- But- Mm-hmm
all it is, is it makes you
ponder that it's a fish.
Oh.
It's magical in a, in a way, but it
makes you ponder it, is it a fish?
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
But, so-
Zac: Is it an actual fish?
Adam: Yeah.
So, so your character, if it fails a
wisdom save of whatever, it, it'll,
it'll, um, it'll make you ponder is it
a fish for- Okay ⦠a little too long.
Zac: Okay.
Adam: Um, there's a couple others.
Um, there's the magical item of, like,
a coin that always lands on head.
Um, there's, um, the arrow of, of line
of sight, uh, which is kinda fun, is
you can throw an arrow, um, but you
become its vision, so you become its
line of sight for if you're lookingâ¦
Like, if you need to, like, look
over a wall or something, you
can throw an arrow and it's-
Zac: Why wouldn't you shoot it?
Adam: No, uh, um, well, I'm just
saying, like, shoot an arrow.
That's what I'm meaning.
I was like,- Like, throw an arrow
⦠"Damn, you're throwing an arrow?"
No, I meant- You'd really-
I meant shooting an arrow.
What
Zac: ranger's throwing an arrow?
Adam: But, but it gives you
line of sight, basically.
Interesting.
Okay.
Um-
Zac: Yeah, that's a pretty cool one.
Adam: So it's like a utility, kinda-
Zac: That's a utility
⦠Adam: kinda thing.
Zac: Yeah, I like that one.
Adam: So magical items don't have to
be, you know- Inherently damage-based
⦠these powerful damage thing.
They can be helpful in some way.
Mm-hmm.
Um, probably my all-time favorite magic
item, D&D related, besides Deck of Many
Things, um, is the robe, uh, with stars
Zac: on it.
Ah, yes.
My-
Adam: Because you could- The
constellation ⦠shuriken- Yeah ⦠stars
out of the robe, and I think that's
just really cool as a wizard to have.
Zac: That's pretty dope.
Pretty sick.
Adam: So.
But anyways, guys, this is
actually our 15th episode.
Woo!
Um, technically, uh, from starting
our new way of doing things, it would
be our 15th, but technically this
is our 20th episode, um, entirely.
And I will say not many podcasts
make it past 10, I will say.
And we did struggle very early on,
but now we're back on track, I think.
Zac: I was right at the end of nine
and I was like, "I wanna end this all."
Adam: Yeah.
So-
Zac: I'm gonna jump off the bridge.
Adam: Um, I will say if you have
gathered with us and- The magical
Zac: noose of nine.
Adam: I will say, uh, so 20
is a milestone, uh- That's
a terrible- ⦠for us.
And I think going forward we hope to,
you know, get some more interviews-
Mm-hmm ⦠and more, um, discussions
into the D&D world- Woo ⦠and
have you guys participate in 'em.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
But again, thank you for all the push
and the reviews that you have left us.
Thank you for all the likes on
our social media pages as well.
We just want to appreciate you
guys Um, for allowing us to do this
and talk about it with you guys.
I hope that you guys feel like
you're just at the table sitting
with us having a discussion.
Zac: It is a, it is very much a passion
that we love to share with other people.
Adam: Certainly.
And if you haven't checked out
Tales of the Broken Realms,
we always will plug that.
Um, season two is coming up.
Me and Zac actually world built
this weekend all the way up.
Drunkenly- Yeah.
⦠Zac: might I add.
Adam: Um, we world built, um, this
weekend, and then we actually world built,
you know, just right before this episode.
So we have a lot planned, and I think
it's gonna be, the stakes are ever higher.
Zac: They do.
They're incrementally
building until, uh, year four.
Yeah.
Adam: Yeah,
Zac: it's a four-year plan.
Adam: And then after that we will, um,
do my storyline in four arcs of that.
Whoa,
Zac: we can't tell them yet.
Adam: No, I know.
I'm still planning on that.
Guys, we gotta
Zac: survive four whole seasons.
Adam: We will survive four whole seasons.
Um, also make sure you guys,
uh, check out Spectre7art on
Instagram- Woo ⦠or TikTok.
Um, they are a wonderful artist.
I will, might add you, if you have not
looked on our TikTok or Instagram page
by now, we have a video posted about it.
It is pinned on our pages.
Um, Spectre, uh, is a
wonderful character artist.
Um, her style is out of
this world I would think so.
But yes, check out Spectre7art on
our page and on their page as well.
Um, they need all, all the support
they can get 'cause their art is-
Zac: Phenomenal
⦠Adam: amazing.
Zac: Amazing.
I think- I don't have words that would
allow this podcast to be produced to
describe how bleeping bleep, bleeping
bleep, bleep, bleep amazing it is.
Yeah.
I'm being so for real.
Adam: But yeah, so check out the video on
her page or, uh, check out her artwork.
Um, we will post her, um, links
in the description as well
so you can go check them out.
I would 10 out of 10 get another
character creation from them as well.
Zac: We, we probably will.
Adam: Well, yeah, so I mean,
we- We definitely will.
Yeah, we definitely have hired
them for future projects.
Future projects.
There you go.
Um, so yeah, check them out.
Um, again, thank you guys for
all the reviews that you've done.
I think it's really impactful
for what we're doing here.
Cheers to episode 20.
Woo.
And that draws the curtain
on this one, folks.
